Phew. What I once figured out on my own in my game is a totally standard technique and is called fixed simulation step/variable render step. (Mine isn't exactly like that, but whatever).
I've occasionally wondered how realistic it is to figure out on your own what they write in textbooks. As it turns out, it's doable, but takes a very long time, at least if you aren't used to inventing and deriving formulas yourself since school.
